Competition Schedule

Prior to the start of the Parkening International Competition, 10 young guitarists will compete in a two-day session.

Tuesday, May 26, 1:00 PM (10 competitors):

All competitors will perform a program not to exceed 12 minutes. The program must include Tárrega's "Capricho árabe" from The Francisco Tárrega Collection, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00698993 (approximate time 5 minutes) and J.S. Bach's "Courante" from the Third Cello Suite, transcribed by Andrés Segovia, Schott & Co. Ltd., London (Belwin-Mills Publishing Corp., Melville, New York) (approximate time 3 minutes). The balance of the program will be free choice.

Wednesday, May 27, 9:00 AM (five finalists):

The five finalists will perform a program not to exceed 15 minutes. The program must include Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Prelude No. 2" from Cinq Préludes, Éditions Max Eschig, Paris (approximate time 3 minutes) and Manuel Ponce's "Preámbulo and Allegro vivo" (in the style of Scarlatti) from Parkening and the Guitar Volume 1, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00699105 (approximate time 4 minutes). The balance of the program will be free choice.

The Young Guitarist Competition performances will be ticketed events open to the public and take place in Raitt Recital Hall. The First Prize and other awards will be given at a special reception following the competition in the Frederick R. Weisman Museum during the afternoon on Wednesday, May 27, 2009.

Parkening International Guitar Competition

Fifteen competitors will perform the first day of the competition. Five semi-finalists will be selected after the first day to proceed to the second day. Three finalists will be selected after the second day to proceed to the third and final day of the competition.

Wednesday, May 27

The First Prize and other awards for the Young Guitarist Competition will be announced at a special reception in the Frederick R. Weisman Museum during the afternoon; this reception will also mark the opening of the Parkening International Guitar Competition with the drawing of order for the first day.

Thursday, May 28, 9:00 AM (15 competitors):

All competitors will perform a program not to exceed fifteen minutes. The program must include J.S. Bach's "Fugue" (BWV 1001) from Christopher Parkening - Solo Pieces, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00690939 (to be published August 2008) (approximate time 5 minutes), Joaquin Rodrigo's "Fandango" from Tres piezas españolas, Schott & Co. Ltd., London (Associated Music Publishers, Inc., New York) (approximate time 4 minutes), and Enrique Granados'  "La Maja de Goya" from Christopher Parkening - Duets & Concertos, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00690938 (to be published July 2008) (approximate time 5 minutes)

Friday, May 29, 1:00 PM (five semi-finalists):

The five semi-finalists will perform a program not to exceed 30 minutes. The second program must include Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's "Sonata: Omággio a Boccherini," Schott & Co. Ltd., London (Associated Music Publishers, Inc., New York) (approximately time 16 minutes). The balance of the program will be free choice. Works from the preliminary round may not be included in the semi-final round.

Saturday, May 30, 7:30 PM (three finalists):

The three finalists will perform a full concerto on the third day of the competition with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Any one of the following concertos is to be performed. In addition to the concerto, finalists will present an encore piece of their choice, not to exceed five minutes that may be selected from a previous round.

Rodrigo: Fantasía para un gentilhombre, Schott and Co. edition (approximate time 22 minutes)

Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez, Schott and Co. edition (approximate time 22 minutes)

Castelnuovo -Tedesco: Concerto No. 1 in D Major, Schott and Co. edition (approximate time 20 minutes)

Ponce: Concierto del Sur, Peer International Corporation edition (approximate time 25 minutes)

Elmer Bernstein: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, Bernal Music Themes and Variations (approximate time 22 minutes)

The medalists and prizewinners will be announced after the conclusion of the orchestral segment and judges deliberations.

All competition performances for the Parkening International Guitar Competition will be ticketed and will take place in Smothers Theatre.

Pepperdine University reserves the right to change any or all criteria or details pertaining to the Competition.
