Parkening Young Guitarist Competition Names 2009 Winners
Christopher Parkening and Pepperdine University are pleased to announce the winners of the second triennial Parkening Young Guitarist Competition. Tim Callobre (pictured at right), 16, of Pasadena, Calif., won first place; Ji Yeon Kim, 16, of Seoul, Korea, won second place; Daniel Tekunoff, 16, of Chandler, Ariz., won third place; Andrea Roberto, 13, of Foggia, Italy, won fourth place; and Chaconne Klaverenga, 16 of Lafayette, Ind., won fifth place.Callobre won a gold medal and cash award of $3,000, while the remaining four each won awards of $750 in addition to their medals.
The Parkening Young Guitarist Competition, whose objective is to identify gifted young classical guitarists ages 17 and younger, took place at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., on May 26 and 27, 2009. It was part of the Parkening International Guitar Competition, the world's preeminent guitar competition with the largest prize purse of any classical guitar competition, which followed the Young Guitarist Competition and ended on May 30.
The other Young Guitarist competitors, each of whom received a cash award of $500, were Matar-Itai Batyonathan, 17, Bruce Buescher, 17, Alec Holcomb, 14, Noah Kim, 13, and John-Marcel Williams, 14, all of the United States.
All of the competitors performed on the first day of the competition (May 26); five finalists were then selected to proceed to the second day. The competitors performed required and free-choice repertoire and were judged on musicianship, tone, technique, and stage presence.
The distinguished panel of three judges for the Young Guitarist Competition, representing different areas of the classical music world, were Patrick Russ, symphonic orchestrator; Pablo Sainz Villegas, Gold Medal winner of the 2006 Parkening International Guitar Competition and concert artist; and David Thomas, classical music record producer and concert promoter.
