Summer Exhibitions Opening Reception
Saturday, May 11, 2024 | 3–6 PM
Join us to celebrate the opening of our summer exhibitions: "On Location in Malibu" and "Rediscovering Constance von Briesen"!
The opening reception is Saturday, May 11 from 3 to 6 PM, with complimentary refreshments and kid-friendly art activities in the courtyard. At 4 PM, Weisman Museum director Andrea Gyorody moderates a roundtable discussion about "On Location in Malibu" with jurors from the California Art Club; seating for the conversation is limited and will be first come, first served.
"On Location in Malibu" celebrates the continued vitality of California Impressionism and plein air painting by showcasing new paintings of Malibu created by contemporary members of the historic California Art Club. Works of art on view will be available for acquisition, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art and the California Art Club, the oldest art association in the state.
"Rediscovering Constance von Briesen" is the first solo museum exhibition of work by Constance von Briesen (1915–2000), a multitalented artist and craftswoman who lived for nearly fifty years in southern California, making her home in Rustic Canyon. Active for many years in the association Women Painters West, as well as in the Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles Art Associations, she frequently exhibited her work in juried shows across the region. Her landscape paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures offer an exquisite close-up view of the California terrain, capturing creeks, root systems, bare trees, and drought-stricken desert.
Registration for the reception is recommended but not required. All aspects of the opening reception are handicap accessible; for additional information about accessibility, please email museum@pepperdine.edu. Both exhibitions will remain on view through July 28, 2024.
